Google Maps in the Classroom

Several of my classmates did a presentation on the effectiveness of Google Maps in the classroom. For their example they presented a lesson plan in which 5th graders got to map out their own field trip. Google Maps was not being very cooperative but I do think the free service could be employed as an effective classroom accessory. However, I personally think a field trip lesson plan would be somewhat ineffective. Instead Google Maps could be effective in a geography class to show certain landscapes or a history/government class to show buildings relevant to American history.
